Certain assistive devices are available in the market which can tell the time in some major languages of the world on pressing the button. However, our target audience is old people who either don’t know how to read or have eyesight problems. Then, illiteracy is an unavoidable issue in Indian villages. So we need to design a device that can tell the time in multiple native languages and dialects so that old people, especially villagers who can speak only their native language can also use the device.
While interviewing old people we also came to know that they also need such devices while traveling as they need to follow their itinerary which includes their medication, diet, and sleep timings as suggested by their therapist (doctor). Although nowadays we have smartphones in our homes, old people mostly find it really difficult to follow up with the language and touch settings.
Therefore our device needs to be portable, convenient to use for oldies and visually challenged and strong, dust, and water-resistant due to its use in rural areas by people who are prone to drop the device on the ground and in water.
We came across some existing devices available in the market'
